Steelie Orbiter Plus Socket: What the Metal Ring Is For

Two parts, two jobs

The Steelie Orbiter Plus Magnetic Socket + Metal Ring is a two-piece accessory for Apple MagSafe iPhones (iPhone 12 and newer). The socket is the part that connects your phone to a Steelie mount. The Metal Ring is an optional adhesive-backed ring that sticks to the back of an Apple MagSafe Charger so you can magnetically attach the socket and mount while you charge.

In other words, the socket handles mounting; the Metal Ring handles mounting while charging. You can use the socket on its own if you only need a mount, and add the Metal Ring later if you want to keep charging while the phone is mounted.

How to set up the Orbiter Plus socket and Metal Ring

These steps follow the supplied product instructions and details. The socket aligns with the magnets inside a MagSafe iPhone, case, or charger.

1. Attach the socket to your phone: The Orbiter Plus Magnetic Socket is designed to align with the magnets inside MagSafe iPhones, cases, and chargers, so it connects right onto the back of your phone in an instant.
2. Mount the phone on a Steelie mount: The socket works with any Steelie mount (sold separately). The neodymium magnet and silicone center provide a strong grip and smooth 360° rotation on the mount.
3. Add the Metal Ring to your MagSafe charger (optional): If you want to mount while charging, stick the optional Metal Ring to the back of your Apple MagSafe Charger using its 3M adhesive.
4. Attach the socket to the ring while charging: With the Metal Ring on your charger, you can magnetically attach the Magnetic Socket and mount while you charge up.

What the Orbiter Plus includes and works with

• Steelie® Orbiter® Plus Magnetic Socket + Metal Ring: The Steelie Orbiter Plus Magnetic Socket + Metal Ring is compatible with any Steelie mount, sold separately. You can add it to an existing Steelie mount instead of buying a whole new kit.

  

• Steelie® Orbiter® Plus Magnetic Socket + Metal Ring: The Orbiter Plus Magnetic Socket is specially designed to align with the magnets inside MagSafe iPhones, cases, and chargers (iPhone 12 and newer). It is intended for MagSafe-compatible iPhones and accessories, not older iPhone models.
• Steelie® Orbiter® Plus Magnetic Socket + Metal Ring: The socket features a powerful neodymium magnet and silicone center for smooth 360° rotation on your Steelie mount of choice. The socket provides the magnetic grip and rotation; the Metal Ring does not add rotation on its own.
• Steelie® Orbiter® Plus Magnetic Socket + Metal Ring: Includes: Orbiter Plus Magnetic Phone Socket and optional adhesive-backed Metal Ring. Both parts come in the box, so you can decide whether to use the Metal Ring now or keep it for later.

When you need the Metal Ring, and when you don’t

Skip the Metal Ring if you only want to mount your phone on a Steelie mount and charge it at other times. The socket alone connects directly to the MagSafe magnets in your iPhone or case.

Use the Metal Ring if you want to keep your phone mounted on a Steelie mount while it charges on an Apple MagSafe Charger. The ring adheres to the back of the charger and gives the socket a magnetic surface to attach to. Without the ring, the charger itself does not provide the same mounting connection.

One limitation to note: the supplied information does not describe how to remove the Metal Ring once adhered, so consider your charger placement before sticking it on.

Check compatibility before you buy

The Orbiter Plus is built for Apple MagSafe iPhones and accessories (iPhone 12 and newer). If you use a case, it should be MagSafe-compatible for the socket to align properly. The socket also works with all other mounts in the Steelie ecosystem, so you can move it between car, office, garage, and home mounts.

If you are starting from scratch and need a mount as well, the Orbiter Plus socket is also available in the Steelie Orbiter Plus Dash Kit or Vent Kit. Otherwise, the standalone socket and ring let you expand an existing Steelie setup.
